THE SONG
What Will Be in the Fields Tomorrow?
Our title, from a song — the inspiration for the title of the script is a song, words and music by Ed Snodderl. Here is the song in a variety of forms. The words —the poetry— below and links to the music (an .mp3 file) and to the lyrics with cord transcription.
What Will Be in the Fields Tomorrow?
What will I see with my eyes?
Will I see the tall grass growing?
Will it be a compromise?
[CHORUS]
No they can't take my memory
Though they will try to steal my soul
I will die before I let them
I will cross another shore.
What will be in our hearts tomorrow
Will be what's in our hearts today.
What we do will be our story.
What will be in the fields tomorrow?
[CHORUS]
No they can't take my memory
Though they will try to steal my soul
I will die before I let them
I will cross another shore.
We can build a bridge together
We can build a bridge today
I will use my Father's hammer
And my Mother's voice to pray.
[CHORUS]
No, they can't take my memory
Though they will try to steal my soul
I will die before I let them
I will cross another shore.

Songwriter and musician Ed Snodderly was one of the musicians to appear in the Coen brothers' movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? His song What Will Be in the Fields Tomorrow? Is from an album by his former group, The Brother Boys. Although not really brothers, Tennensseans Ed Snodderly and Eugene Wolf harmonize beautifully in the classic country brother duo style. Adding a little country, folk, pop, bluegrass, swing and rockabilly to the mix, the Brother Boys have called their sound new hillbilly music.
The Voices Project extends a special thanks to Ed Snodderly for the use of his song and title for with readers' theatre script.
